Scott Jurek

Scott Jurek is an ultra marathoner. Jurek has not only ran in but twice won the 153 mile Badwater Race in Death Valley and has won the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run seven times. He once ran 165.7 miles in one day, making him the U.S. record holder for a 24 hour run. Oh, and by the way, he is vegan!

Jurek has been running races since 1994. He went vegan in 1999 and that's when he started to win. He cites his vegan diet as the reason for his incredible health and recovery in training. Jurek felt that it was important as an athlete and an environmentalist that he take his diet all the way to vegan. He said, "it's been a big reason why I've been so consistent with races and pumping out serious results."
Christine Vardaros

In Defense of Animals (IDA) welcomes Christine Vardaros to its ever-expanding list of professional athletes who are proving the importance of a vegan diet not only for what it does for animals but for what it can do to improve overall strength and performance when competing. Christine is also our new Team IDA spokesperson. The professional cyclist resides in Mill Valley, California when she is not traveling around the country racing.
Fiona Oakes

Fiona Oakes was born in the United Kingdom in Chesterfield. She was an animal advocate and caretaker from the start and doesn't ever remember eating meat. She has been vegan for over 20 years. She was also a natural athlete from a young age, playing hockey for her county's junior team and was an avid cyclist. She raced all over the world in women's cycling events on the track and road.
Ricardo Moreira

Ricardo Moreira is one of only two vegans competing on the international Ultimate Fighting circuit. Also known as cage fighting, this extreme sport pits martial artists of all fighting styles against each other where they punch, kick, and wrestle to win. Ricardo has a black belt in karate, a contact sport in which he won a state title, and studies other martial arts, such as Aikido and Jiu Jitsu. He also lives an ultra-healthy straight-edge lifestyle, and hopes setting a positive example will inspire more athletes to go vegan, and more vegans to stay physically fit.
